- Delicious food to enjoy and recreate at home
The concept behind Jenius Social is simple; learn to cook delicious food while having fun. This is exactly the experience I had when I tried my hand at the ‘Classic French Desserts’ class.
Based in a residential area of London's Holloway Road, Jenius Social could easily be mistaken for a quaint deli, with shelves stacked with jars of pickles and bottles of sauces from small producers. The kitchen is relatively small but the industrial table and stainless steel top give it a professional feel.
The resident chef, Andrew, introduced the session with a brief overview of the aims and the philosophy behind ‘Jenius Social.’ After this we dived straight in, with a tutorial on how to make a Strawberry Mousse with delicious fresh Strawberry Coulis. Andrew had a good rapport with the class, demonstrating his expertise and offering tips and advice throughout.
During the two hour class we constructed a Strawberry Mousse, Almond Tuiles, Tarte Tatin, Chocolate Fondant and Strawberry Mille Fuille. Despite the range of desserts and limited time, Andrew guided us through the process with ease and even allowed time for us to enjoy the fruits of our labour!
My highlights were the Chocolate Fondant, which was beautifully rich with a gooey centre, and the Almond Tuiles, which were delicate, nutty and light.
Although fast-paced, the class was engaging throughout and fun, which made the two hours fly by. Aswell as creating five beautiful desserts, I left not only with my own sweet treats to enjoy at home but also vital cooking techniques which I look forward to testing in my own kitchen.
