THE SCENIC SUPPER: TODENHAM

24/08/22

Why you should visit:

  • For a completely unique dining experience

  • The picturesque countryside view

  • Enjoy delicious food and lovely cocktails

  • Spend quality time with friends or family

DESTINATION:

The Scenic Supper is situated in the fields of Todenham Manor Farm with the most glorious and uninterrupted view of the countryside. Originally launched during the pandemic, the idea behind The Scenic Supper is that guests dine in individual groups or pairs in their own mini restaurant hut.

The Scenic Supper

There is music that plays out from the separate kitchen hut, festoon lights adorned around the whole space and It’s wonderfully romantic and rather fun. It’s also dog friendly, so my husband Steve and I took our little sausage dog Ringo along with us.

DECOR:

The individual dining spaces are a bit like little greenhouses/beach huts and they are raised up slightly to have a beautiful view of the fields (and cows) in front. Each dining pod features a tablecloth adorned table and chairs alongside lights, blankets, heaters, candles and flowers. It’s cosy and features everything you need for an evening under the stars.

DINING:

We were there to sample the 6-course tasting menu (£65 per person) and our menu for the evening was the following:

Heritage Carrot & Honey Soup

Salmon Gravalax, Beetroot & Horseradish Relish & Sourdough

Chicken Livers, Tagliatelle, Sage & Madeira

Blackberry & Ricotta Mille Feuille

Feather blade of Beef, Pomme Puree & Pickled Vegetables

Braised Plum, Oat Crumble & Anise Custard

We really enjoyed the whole menu, but we both had a couple of standout dishes. Firstly, the Chicken Liver Tagliatelle, which was rich, sweet and absolutely delicious. I could definitely have solely enjoyed that as a main course and been happy. The other highlight was the Feather blade of Beef, which melted in the mouth it was that perfectly cooked and I loved the fact it came from the cows on the farm where we ate dinner that evening. Neither of us had ever tried Star Anise Custard before and it’s a flavour combination I’ll definitely be having a go at myself this Autumn.

We both felt like the menu was portioned just right and were perfectly full, but not too stuffed that we couldn’t move. The only issue on the night was the service, as it was quite slow to begin with and we waited over an hour between our soup course and the salmon dish, which felt poorly timed. However, the staff were very friendly and kept checking on us for drinks and communicated the delay to us due to a fully booked evening and only one chef, so it wasn’t too much of a problem – especially with that lovely view to occupy us.

DEBRIEF:

We really enjoyed our visit to The Scenic Supper and it felt like an entirely new dining experience. It may be something that started because of the Pandemic, but it continues to be novel and exciting and I think it is definitely here to stay.

Their spot in Todenham has come to a close for the year now, but they have a Winter nights series coming up in Cheltenham from 9th November until 31st December, which is definitely worth checking out!
